WHAT THE CALM BIRTH SCHOOL DID TO HELP SUPPORT BLACK AND BROWN PREGNANT WOMEN

I have been an affiliate of The Calm Birth School (TCBS) for over a year now and I can honestly say that their ethos and approach to childbirth and motherhood is like a breath of fresh air.

We serve a diverse community and the school strives to ensure inclusivity, learning and growth for all its instructors and the clients that they serve.

INCREASED AWARENESS OF DISPARITIES BASED ON RACE

The increase in awareness over the last 12 months in relation to overt racism and inequalities in our society and how this has adverse outcomes for black and brown people cannot be understated.

The untimely death of George Floyd sparked an upsurgence in the The Black Lives Matter movement.

The Five Times More campaign raised awareness of the sad statistic that black women in the UK are four times more likely to die in pregnancy & childbirth (MBRRACE, 2020).

These are just two of the many organisations and groups that are actively working to end racism and help improve the lives of people who are at the receiving end of racist structures and institutions.

SHOCKING STATISTICS

The shocking statistic that black and brown women are more likely to experience adverse outcomes than their white counterparts has had a deep impact on how we at TCBS seek to support women who access our courses.

During pregnancy when women are at their most vulnerable, the statistics bear out the fact that women of colour are indeed not as safe as their white counterparts.

The increased risk of death is unexplained by researchers, healthcare professionals and public health officials and many feel that institutional racism is at the heart of the problem.

With this in mind, Liz Stanford, owner of TCBS, approached me and asked if I would be interested in writing some bespoke tracks for our black and brown clients.

Of course, I said yes!

BESPOKE TRACKS

I have created two additional bespoke Hypnosis and Affirmation MP3’s to be added to TCBS library that are for use exclusively by black and brown pregnant women.

The aim of these new tracks is to acknowledge that the experience of racism is trauma and that trauma can cause a person to disconnect from their own internal sense of safety.

SUPPORT FOR BLACK AND BROWN PREGNANT WOMEN

We hope that these tracks will help women to begin to process some of their feelings and empower them to build resilience and strength to face some of the challenges that come with being pregnant as well as finding a space to heal from racial trauma.

Liz and I chatted about this during an IG live last week, you can catch up and watch it here

Some of the affirmations include:

  • I am a beautiful black woman
  • I love my beautiful melanin skin
  • I am perfect just the way I am
  • I am proud of my culture, upbringing and experiences, they made me who I am
  • I feel comfortable in my own skin

I love that The Calm Birth School believes in allyship and continuous learning to better improve the services we offer to our black and brown clients. Writing this new script and these affirmations was healing for me too in many ways.

The tracks are available on TCBS website ready for download/purchase. If you would like to order some tracks for yourself or a loved one you can do so by visiting the Calm Birth School Website here.

I am super excited to be able to share this with as many black/brown pregnant women as possible!
